John comes from a 4th generation family of hunters. His roots take him back to Europe where his family developed a reputable name for hunting wild boar, fox & hare with hounds and of course, pursuing Canada geese. His father first introduced him to the sport as a young boy at age 10 and this ignited a burning desire in John to learn to hunt his game of choice – the Canada goose. Special memories of hunting with his Dad still bring a smile to his face. Mouth calling for Canada’s was the only available method to attract geese during the old days when his ancestors hunted on the mud flats of southern Italy so John began his search for a mentor to learn and master the art of goose calling with an instrument. He made a phone call to a gentleman by the name of Tim Grounds, a reference he had received from a fellow hunter, and spoke to Tim about goose calling for the very first time. John had indeed found his mentor and from that day forward went on to win his first goose calling championship. Serious goose calling for John began as far back as 1983 when at the age of 15, he and his family hunted honkers for the very first time with an outfitter. After hearing and watching geese respond to the call of the guide, John decided he had to learn to do the same only better. That was his debut and he has never let up since. John was fortunate to have met some remarkable people along the way who had a huge influence on his calling abilities. He became good friends with names such as Terry Primeau, Andy Kinstler & Mike Levasseur, all three Canadian champion duck and goose callers. These three gentlemen always made time to share and offer knowledge, advice and techniques to help John improve. A dedicated conservationist, John is the chairperson for a local Ducks Unlimited chapter near his home and has been on board with DU for close to 20 years. He is devoted to wildlife conservation in assuring the preservation and proper wildlife management of several properties that he owns & leases. His most recent venture is his commitment to the QDMA program www.qdma.com (Quality Deer Management Association), where over 400 acres has been set aside to help improve the quality of the deer herd with well maintained food plots and selective harvest criteria. John has appeared in several magazines, newspaper articles, video productions & TV shows on waterfowling. John is also a Pro Staffer for the following industry related companies: Avery Outdoors, GK Calls, KENT Cartridge, Benelli USA, Le Chameau & E.A.R. |
